How has the recent US residential credit crisis impacted the banking industry's constant drive for operational efficiency?

The impact of the US consumer credit crisis in 2007 was global in scale. Financial institutions around the world were affected because they own collateralized debt obligations packaged from residential sub-prime mortgages. While the ensuing loan loss reserves and write-offs did not occur at every bank, the impact was widespread enough to lower earnings and market value of several leading financial institutions.
